Literacy
Literacy is one of the core subjects we teach at Abbotswood. Children's literacy skills are developed through a partnership with parents
During their pre-school years, children have already begun to learn about stories and nursery rhymes. They have started to listen and talk to others. They may know a little about writing. The Foundation (reception) Stage at Abbotswood builds on the knowledge that the child already has. Over their time in Key Stage 1, children will develop their Literacy skills through the Literacy Hour. During this time they will learn basic reading skills and follow a carefully selected reading programme. They will have experience of many types of literature including stories, non-fiction, poetry and plays. Many aspects of writing will be taught, as well as spelling, grammar, punctuation and joined handwriting. An example of the type of texts read In Key Stage 2 the Literacy Hour closely follows the Literacy Strategy. In addition to this there are opportunities for extended writing, reading and drama. Children participate in class discussions and group activities to develop oral language. The structured reading scheme continues throughout the school. The children are also encouraged to visit the school library, where a wide range of literature may be borrowed, including tapes and story sacks. The children may also have access to the Internet here.
The children are encouraged to write with meaning and for a purpose. They are given the opportunity to write imaginatively and factually. Emphasis on a high standard of achievement encourages pride in the content and presentation of their work.
