Together We Can Make It

PSHE

PSHE & C. Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship

PSHE is a basic framework through which the school provides opportunities for active learning and practical development of the key skills of communication, working with others, improving own learning and performance and problem solving.  There are many areas of the curriculum that are part of this.

Citizenship

This area of the curriculum aims to encourage children to play an active role as future citizens and members of society.  Much of this will be covered through formal planned and timetabled teaching in line with the new Citizenship scheme of work from the QCA and through Humanities and RE work and the ethos of the school.

Children will learn about different kinds of duties, responsibilities and rights at home, at school and in the wider community, and that these can sometimes conflict with each other.  They will be encouraged to take part in resolving differences by looking at alternatives, making decisions and justifying choices made.  They will also be given opportunities to explore the consequences of anti-social behaviour, including bullying, for individuals and communities.  Children will be encouraged to appreciate the diversity of national, regional, religious and ethnic identities within the UK.

Drugs Education

Throughout Key Stage 1 children will be taught about medicines that can help us and their safe use.  Then in Key Stage 2 the focus will move on to learning about some substances that can harm us.  During Year 5 the children will deal with the subjects of smoking and alcohol in the context of good health.  As part of this topic they will explore ideas about why people smoke or drink alcohol and learn about some of the effects on health.

During Year 5 or 6 the children will be learning about harmful and illegal substances.  This will be based upon materials from Channel 4's 'The Good Health Programme' and the BBC's 'Substance Misuse' video.  The aim is to promote discussion in school and to equip children with the strategies to assess risks and to make informed choices.  There will be homework and information for parents and carers to encourage discussion of topics covered in school.

Sex and Relationships Education

Throughout both Key Stages children are encouraged to form appropriate relationships with their peers and with adults working with them in school.  In Key Stage 2 children learn about how their bodies are 'Growing and Changing' and at the end of Year 6 children will complete a module on Sex and Relationships Education. There are three elements to Sex and Relationships education: - attitudes and values, personal and social skills, and knowledge and understanding. These elements fit into four themes:

  •  Developing confidence and taking responsibility whilst making the most of their ability.
  • Preparing to take an active role as citizens.
  • Developing a healthier, safer lifestyle.
  • Developing good relationships and respecting the differences between people.

Parents are given the opportunity to view the video which we use and they have the right to withdraw their child from all or part of the programme if they wish, except those elements taught as part of the Science National Curriculum.
