Together We Can Make It

RE

Religious Education must be provided by law in every maintained school for all pupils, with the exception of those withdrawn by their parents. Through our teaching of this subject, we aim to promote spiritual and moral awareness, a sense of self and a sense of purpose and responsibility. We aim to develop pupils' knowledge, understanding and awareness of Christianity, as the predominant religion in Great Britain. We also develop the children's understanding of the other principal religions represented in the country, to encourage respect for those holding different beliefs. The RE curriculum does not intend to indoctrinate children towards religion but to help them develop an understanding of the nature of religious beliefs and practices. We aim to ensure that children respect the importance of religion to those who hold religious beliefs.

Parents have the right to withdraw their child from Religious Education. Children will be found an alternative place to work and work will be set for them.

Collective Worship

It is a legal requirement that each school holds a daily act of collective worship. The content of the worship is of a broadly Christian nature. It is sensitively planned for young children of a variety of backgrounds. The format of the worship varies. It may be based on a story, a poem or play, piece of music or visual aid. It often involves children in sharing their thoughts on a variety of ideas that relate to care for others and on themes of family, love, respect and responsibility. During the act of worship, time is set aside for prayer or personal thought and stillness. There are opportunities in school assemblies when groups of pupils take it in turn sharing with the rest of the school their personal achievements; these may be school or home-based achievements. At Abbotswood Primary School we believe in the successes of all the children, no matter how small or great these successes may be.

Parents have the right to withdraw their children from collective worship. In this case an alternative place for them to read will be found.
